Green Trade Policies and Smallholder Inclusion: Reflections from the WTO Forum – Pietro Paganini
On the 13th, I had the privilege of addressing a discerning audience at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva, diving deep into the theme, Promoting Smallholders’ Inclusion in the Advancement of Green Trade.
Here’s a snapshot of the key themes we explored the:
– Critical role of green trade in shaping a sustainable future.
– Multifaceted challenges faced by smallholders on the global trade stage.
– Urgency of transitioning from unilateral to multilateral strategies.
and
– Dynamic measures to elevate smallholders’ environmental awareness and compliance.
-Forging pathways that guarantee smallholders an unfettered gateway to green trade opportunities.

Green Trade Policies and Smallholder Inclusion
A key observation is that the EU is committed to strong environmental regulations but sometimes overlooks unintended consequences. Their approach can be one-sided and miss the perspective of commodity-exporting countries. An example is the EUDR, which aims to combat deforestation. However, successful implementation requires collaboration across the entire supply chain.
During my presentation, I focused on Recent Trends and State-of-Play in Global Green Trade. Some key topics included:
– The increasing speed of green trade policies (GTP).
– A detailed examination of the structure of green trade policies.
– Insights into the changing global trade landscape.
– A specific example of Indonesia and its smallholder community producing palm oil.
– The urgent need for a unified multilateral approach.

As we move forward, it’s pivotal to strike a balance that intertwines economic growth, social cohesion, and environmental stewardship. We must tread with caution, ensuring that green trade policies serve as bridges, not barriers, especially for our invaluable smallholder community.
I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this dialogue and look forward to the positive change we can collectively usher in.
