EU Agrifood: Driving Competitiveness, Sustainability, and Resilience
The pledge, titled “EU Agrifood: Driving Competitiveness, Sustainability, and Resilience”, articulates a strong response to the recent policies that have underplayed the pivotal role of the agri-food sector, often unfairly blamed during climate and health crises. This narrative has impacted employment, investment, research, and innovation adversely, making a significant reevaluation both necessary and timely.

Central to this pledge is the objective to reinstate the agri-food sector at the core of the European political agenda. It emphasizes enhancing the production capacity, resilience, and efficiency of Europe’s agri-food supply chains, asserting the importance of global leadership in this domain. To achieve these goals, the pledge outlines several critical actions:
Promotion of a European food security and self-sufficiency plan that balances economic, social, and environmental sustainability. This plan aims to boost productivity and eliminate value losses and food waste, advocating for the redistribution of food at risk of being wasted.

Investment in infrastructure and digitalization of trade controls to enhance supply chain robustness and expedite processes. This includes combating food counterfeiting and consumer deception to protect European agri-food excellence.
Balanced revision of EU animal welfare legislation to ensure it aligns with sustainability while preserving competitiveness, preventing the necessity for consumers to turn to lower quality imports.

Advancement in agri-tech solutions including the development and adoption of AI and IoT in agricultural practices to enhance productivity and mitigate climate impact. This also involves investing in regenerative agriculture and supporting the financial sustainability of agri-food SMEs.
Encouragement of a balanced approach to food system transitions to consider the needs and interests of the population and the business community thoroughly.
This pledge not only addresses the immediate needs of the agri-food sector but also envisions a resilient, sustainable future that secures Europe’s standing in the global market. By aligning with these objectives, we aim to contribute meaningfully to a sector that is fundamental to the livelihood and well-being of European citizens and beyond.
