Addressing Malnutrition and Obesity in Europe 

The symposium presented alarming new data on obesity, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address this often-overlooked issue. Despite the fear of confronting obesity and acknowledging the reality of an unbalanced lifestyle, the symposium aimed to foster a deeper understanding and proactive measures.

One of the key discussions revolved around the decline of the Mediterranean Diet from the late 20th to early 21st century. Although currently stable, the diet’s adoption has diminished due to changes in eating habits, such as reduced consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fish, increased solitary dining, and a decline in social interactions. The symposium explored how these social dynamics contribute to weight gain and the role of genetic factors in influencing weight.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has doubled among adults and quadrupled among adolescents since 1990. In 2022, one in eight people worldwide were obese. This alarming trend is linked to socioeconomic conditions and genetic predispositions, further complicating the issue. The symposium emphasized that current EU policies, like the front-of-pack labelling system, are not effective and often lead to unintended consequences.

Pietro Paganini, President of Competere, highlighted that obesity is an “invisible pandemic” with severe repercussions on public health, social relationships, productivity, and the global economy. The event underscored the need for personalized approaches to public health strategies, leveraging technological advancements and personalized medicine to address individual needs effectively.
